FAQs

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an extremely efficient and effective way to get into world-class shape. Our workouts consist of constantly varied, functional movements (like pushups and pullups, deadlifts and squats, gymnastics, kettlebells, running, rowing, and olympic lifting), executed at high intensity in a group setting. Essentially, a fun, friendly, yet high-intensity boot camp, with weights.

Am I fit enough to CrossFit?

Yes, absolutely. Our programming is designed to test even the most elite level CrossFitter as we believe you will never be ‘fit’ enough. However, our coaches are there to ‘scale’ each workout and tailor it to your individual needs in order to help you progress in the quickest and most effective manner. We recommend every athlete tracks there progress by keeping a training diary.

Do i need any experience or a minimum level of fitness?

CrossFit is for anyone, regardless of their age or fitness level. Our members range from Army PTI's to grandfathers in their mid-seventies and desk jockeys with barely enough hand-eye coordination to use a mouse. In short, if you care about health, real-world performance, or just want to look better naked, CrossFit is for you.

I don't want to get big, Will CrossFit make me 'bulky'?

We get asked this ALL the time… No. Strength is an important factor in fitness and you can expect to lift heavy weights at CrossFit DHM, this should especially be addressed if it’s a weakness. However, in order to get that big, bulky shape you need to be lifting heavy on a much larger frequency than we will program and eating an enormous number of calories. Our programming will feature heavy weights but it will also cater for those that love a longer, lighter workout heading into the 20minute time domain

What if i'm REALLY out of shape and i'm kind of terrified?

We promise you’ll be totally fine. Trust us. We’ve had tons of people come in the door who were fatter, weaker, older, and less coordinated than you are, and they were totally fine. And, more importantly, most of them joined the gym and are now in great shape.

CrossFit seems to hardcore

So you can’t do a handstand press-up? Never even heard of a muscle-up?

Not important. CrossFit is about progression and you will not be required to perform any of these movements until you have mastered the basics. We feature a skill in almost every class, which is your chance to learn something new, or improve the technique on something you may already know.

We can scale each workout to maximise your personal development, all you need to do is try your best and if you have any difficulty we will be there to help you overcome it!

I don't have time to workout

Yes you do. Our classes are based on 1-hour time slots during which we get people warmed-up, coach technique, workout, and skills development. For those unusually pressed for time this provides a safe, effective workout in 25-30mins and for those on a less hectic schedule, they can enjoy the chance to develop skills under the expert eyes of our staff post workout.
If that’s not enough, you need to prioritise your health before you can find a formula that works!

What if I need a little extra coaching?

We are happy to help. Ask any of the staff for advice anytime. If you want more dedicated asistance on a specific movement, a diet plan or sport specific programming then book in for some personal training.

I'm carrying a bit of an injury, can I still do CrossFit?

Of course! Explain your injury to your coach and he will adapt the WOD for you.
You can still train with the regular group class. Missing an arm? Single arm lifts,
band assisted pull-ups, scaled single arm press-ups, etc. Athletes come in all shapes
and sizes and we aim to push all of them to improve their best!

Do I have to become a member to do personal training?

No. Personal training is available to both members and non-members, at the same price.

Are all CrossFit gyms the same?

No! CrossFit has an open business model, we are not a franchise. Individual CrossFit boxes operate under their own philosophy and offer their own atmospheres.

What makes your CrossFit gym stand out from the rest?

We are owned and run as a family gym, Dave (Head Coach) and Joyce Ranson (Coach) and our daughter Ellen (Kids Club Coach)
Training at CrossFit DHM goes above and beyond merely showing up at the gym. You’ll become part of a community of people committed to a permanent improvement in their physical fitness that transfers into their daily lives. We are knowledgeable and experienced Coaches who will guide you and motivate you through every workout.
We use specialist Coaches who are of the very highest quality in the area for our Mobility and Power Lifting sessions.

Why are the membership fees higher than those at conventional gyms?

Although this may seem true when comparing our fees to “regular” gyms, it is not. You are being coached at all times. You are receiving personal training without the high cost of personal training. You learn techniques and methodology from experienced Coaches that have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others. You will be challenged here like never before. If it was easy, everyone would do it. That’s what makes it great.
